I think 6a as a whole still gets unfairly looked down on based on the opinions of people who were into the show for the wrong reasons.
still though I probably think the guy who played vito wasn't really an accomplished enough actor to carry that storyline so it was kind of a jarring shift at the time
i'm winding down my first full rewatch and 5 and 4 are both better than 6a, and 6b is still probably the best, but it's really hard to decide where 1 2 and 3 fall into that. hard to compare them to 6a and 6b especially.
it helps that when rewatching we aren't waiting a week between episodes. i think 5-6a were disliked at the time because it felt like they were treading water, when in hindsight those dudes being stuck in their patterns was intentional and good

I remember when 6a first aired the conversation in the media/online was dominated by the Vito storyline but when you rewatch it really doesn't take up that much storyline. And it is such a good, tragic little short story of the kind that the Sopranos was a fucking maserclass in.

I feel like the first two season are almost a different show. the first two seasons have some wacky moments and are mostly fun. the show really started taking the moral weight of their decisions seriously around 3 and it gets dark in the best way

University is masterful in the way it stratifies The Tannenbaums —> The Sopranos —> Caitlin’s rich family —> The Dantes/Rosalie Aprile —> Ralphie —> Georgie —> Tracee
Tracee’s lines about making genuine change as she overcomes childhood trauma and Tony’s flippant dismissal, they hit so much harder knowing that Tony will never use therapy to a meaningful end
people here used to think Noah was a bad character
i know everyone hates university because of meadow's rommate, but it was the first episode i had ever seen. i had been under the impression that it was a "mob show" and didn't take itself too seriously. i was fucking traumatized by the ending
