MDN got the classic trax, but the production is way better on 13th step. way more dynamic. not to mention it was made by an actual band, as opposed to billy on everything but drums with maynard added after the fact. i mean seriously, look no further than the opening song:
yeah this song is dope. love when the distorted part comes in.
this is...not good. too alt-bro radio rock. maynard's voice sounds bad. transiberian orchestra guitar leads. just all of their worst tendencies and none of the things that were good about the band. disappointing.
APC kind of seems like a band that had a short period of time for relevancy and it expired right after 13th step came out.
to me, the appeal of those albums is that they somehow managed to take a lot of aesthetic signifiers of that era in mainstream rock music, an era that was a true low point for mainstream rock music, and actually make it work somehow.
without that context it doesn't really work and they should have left well enough alone.
gonna get ripped and listen to mer de noms on my way home from work tho

yeah. and that's kind of the point to me. they were a big dramatic alt-rock band that could smuggle in atmosphere and cure-esque sensitivity and sweeping emotion, even subtlety into the big tent rock format. like even that song "the package" lostintheair posted shows a lot of restraint in its composition and then when the big distorted guitar part comes in it hits super hard and in a convincing way. it's good songwriting.
but just like, i don't know what they're fucking trying to do with that new song other than just add another faux-tender listless rock song to a radio playlist i guess. i guess they want to be theory of a deadman now or whatever. maybe there'll be a couple good tracks on the album but not holding out much hope now.

yeah, exactly. these are both albums that i used to listen to when i'd go for long walks at night because the vibe just fit and there was a real sense of atmosphere.

i agree
the most jarring thing about this track, other than the horrible lyrics, is the guitar-center bro lead guitar. the weird muted glock (xylophone?) in the first break is kind of good, with the horns (?) and everything. then it goes into that bad syncopated riff and falls apart. hints of something good but mostly bad. anyway i'm listening to mer de noms now
dap the above post

judith isn't one of my fav songs from that album but the video rules. mer de noms is so fing good. the original lineup of this band was amazing. love troy vl and paz on bass. josh freese is a sickass drummer. the fill at 2:00 in this clip is .
